Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born on 11 June 1910 in Saint-Andrรฉ-de-Cubzac, France . He graduated from France's naval academy in 1933, intending to become a navy pilot, but a near-fatal automobile accident in which both his arms were broken ended that aspiration and redirected his life toward the sea . He served as a gunnery officer in World War II and was a member of the French Resistance, later receiving the Legion of Honour for his espionage work .
In 1943, Cousteau and French engineer รmile Gagnan developed the first fully automatic compressed-air Aqua-Lung (scuba apparatus), which allowed divers to swim freely underwater for extended periods . In 1950, he converted a British minesweeper into the Calypso, an oceanographic research ship that became his home and the symbol of his expeditions . His book The Silent World (1953), co-written with Frรฉdรฉric Dumas, and the 1956 documentary film of the same name โ which won both the Palme d'Or at Cannes and an Academy Award โ popularised oceanographic research and the sport of scuba diving around the world .
Key Achievements:
Co-Inventor of the Aqua-Lung (1943) โ Revolutionised underwater exploration and diving
The Calypso (1950) โ His legendary research vessel, a symbol of ocean exploration
Academy Award-Winning Filmmaker โ The Silent World (1956) and World Without Sun (1964) both won Oscars
Pioneer of Marine Conservation โ He campaigned against ocean dumping, commercial whaling, and nuclear waste disposal
Presidential Medal of Freedom (1985) โ Awarded by the United States for his contributions
Cousteau Society (1973) โ Founded the non-profit organisation dedicated to marine conservation
Over 50 Books & 120 Films โ His work brought the underwater world to millions

Cousteau's journey was one of extraordinary curiosity and relentless adventure. His love of the ocean and underwater diving led him to become the most famous explorer of the 20th century . He invented numerous tools for oceanographers, including the "diving saucer" (SP-350), an easily manoeuvrable small submarine for seafloor exploration, as well as a number of underwater cameras . From 1968 to 1976, he produced and starred in the American television series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, which brought the ocean's wonders into homes across the globe . Later in life, he became a passionate advocate for marine conservation, mobilising public opinion against nuclear waste dumping in the Mediterranean and speaking out against commercial whaling . He died on 25 June 1997, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire explorers and conservationists.
