Her father, Ernest Boulanger, was a Prix de Rome-winning composer and professor at the Paris Conservatoire; her mother, Raïssa, was a Russian singer of noble descent; her sister, Nadia, would become one of the most influential music teachers of the 20th century . At just two years old, Lili displayed absolute pitch, astonishing the composer Gabriel Fauré, who became a family friend and mentor . She accompanied her sister to classes at the Conservatoire from age five, absorbing the principles of harmony and composition .

Her talent was extraordinary, yet her life was shadowed by illness. At age two, she contracted bronchial pneumonia, leaving her with a fragile immune system that would plague her throughout her short life . Despite this, she entered the Conservatoire in 1912, and in 1913, she entered the Prix de Rome competition. She won with her cantata Faust et Hélène, receiving 31 votes out of 36 from the Académie des Beaux-Arts . The press hailed her as a revelation, with one critic writing: "Mlle Lili Boulanger gave us one of the most beautiful cantatas that has been heard in many years" .
