Fanny Cรคcilie Mendelssohn was born on 14 November 1805 in Hamburg, Germany, into one of the most distinguished musical families of the era . She was the eldest child of Abraham Mendelssohn and Lea Salomon, and the granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn . Her younger brother Felix, born in 1809, would become one of the most celebrated composers of the 19th century .
Fanny received the same exceptional musical education as her brother, studying piano with Ludwig Berger and composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter . Zelter, a teacher of extraordinary reputation, was equally impressed by both siblings, writing to Goethe: "He has adorable children and his oldest daughter could give you something of Sebastian Bach. This child is really something special" . Felix himself readily admitted that his sister played the piano better than he did .
Despite her prodigious talent, Fanny was constrained by the social conventions of her time. Her father wrote to her in 1820: "Music will perhaps become his [Felix's] profession, while for you it can and must be only an ornament" . In 1829, she married the Prussian court painter Wilhelm Hensel, who supported her composing . In 1846, at the age of 40, she finally published a collection of her songs as her Opus 1, defying her brother's cautious advice . She died tragically on 14 May 1847, at the age of 41, from a stroke suffered while rehearsing one of her brother's oratorios . Felix survived her by barely six months .
Key Works:
Das Jahr (The Year) โ A cycle of 12 piano pieces depicting the months of the year, written on tinted sheets of paper and illustrated by her husband, each piece accompanied by a short poem
Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 11 โ Her only published large-scale chamber work, written in her final year
String Quartet in E-flat major โ A work of profound emotional depth, full of haunting echoes
Overture in C โ Her only known orchestral work, a piece of delicate splendour
Hiob (Job) Cantata โ A powerful choral work based on the Book of Job, demonstrating her mastery of counterpoint
Easter Sonata โ A piano sonata written in 1828, mistakenly attributed to her brother for decades until correctly identified in 2010
Bergeslust โ Her final song, written just one day before her death
250+ Lieder โ Including settings of Heine, Goethe, Eichendorff, and Rรผckert

Fanny's journey was one of extraordinary creative achievement in a world dominated by men. She was a child prodigy of Mozartean abilities, yet her career was confined to private spaces. From 1831, she organised the Sonntagsmusiken, weekly Sunday concerts in the family home that attracted luminaries such as Franz Liszt, Niccolรฒ Paganini, Clara Schumann, and Heinrich Heine . In this salon setting, she flourished as a composer, conductor, performer, and organiser .
Her long-desired trip to Italy in 1839-1840 marked a turning point, as her music was highly praised by the professional musicians she encountered in Rome . This experience boosted her confidence and inspired her to finally publish her works . Today, her music has experienced a well-deserved revival, and she is recognised as one of the most important female composers of the 19th century .
