Under the patronage of the Emperor Justinian I, he was appointed commander of the imperial armies and led a series of campaigns that restored much of the former Roman Empire to Byzantine control . His military genius was legendary:

The Vandal War (533–534):

Battle of Ad Decimum – Defeated the Vandal king Gelimer near Carthage

Battle of Tricamarum – His decisive victory brought the Vandal Kingdom to an end

North Africa regained – The former Roman province was restored to the Empire

The Gothic War (535–540):

Captured Sicily – His first Italian campaign

Captured Naples and Rome – Re-established Byzantine control over the city

Defeated the Gothic king Wittigis – The Gothic kingdom collapsed
