In 1953, she joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the agency that would become NASA, working in the segregated West Area Computing section at Langley Research Center . In 1958, her mathematical genius led her to the Space Task Group, where she calculated trajectories for America's first human spaceflight . Astronaut John Glenn, preparing for his historic orbital mission in 1962, refused to fly until Johnson personally verified the computer's calculations—"If she says they're good, then I'm ready to go" .
