He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and flew F-86 Sabre jets in 66 combat missions during the Korean War, credited with destroying two enemy MIG-15 fighters .

In 1963, Aldrin completed a Doctorate in Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was selected to join NASA's third group of astronauts . He became the first astronaut to hold a doctoral degree . His first spaceflight was Gemini XII in 1966, during which he spent over five hours on a spacewalk, breaking the record for extra-vehicular activity .

On 16 July 1969, Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins launched aboard Apollo 11 atop a Saturn V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida . Four days later, on 20 July, Armstrong and Aldrin piloted the Lunar Module "Eagle" to the Moon's surface, with Aldrin famously announcing: "Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed." Nineteen minutes after Armstrong's first step, Aldrin became the second person to walk on the Moon .
