Sir Alexander Fleming was born on 6 August 1881 in Ayrshire, Scotland, the third of four children raised on a farm in the lush countryside of south-west Scotland. His first steps into science came when his brother suggested he take up medicine, and so Alexander enrolled at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London . He had also been pursuing a military career since 1900, eventually serving as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps throughout the First World War. It was during his time on the Western Front that he first became interested in studying antibacterial substances, as he saw first-hand that sepsis was a major killer of soldiers on the battlefield .
On a fateful day in September 1928, Fleming returned to his unkempt laboratory at St Mary's Hospital after a family holiday and noticed that a mould had contaminated one of his cultures of staphylococci bacteria. Where the mould had grown, the bacteria had been destroyed . He isolated the active compound and named it "penicillin" after its source, the mould Penicillium notatum. In 1945, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, who had developed methods for the mass production of the drug .
Key Achievements:
Discovery of Penicillin (1928) โ The world's first antibiotic, which has saved countless millions of lives
Discovery of Lysozyme (1923) โ A naturally occurring antibacterial substance found in tears and nasal mucus
Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine (1945) โ Shared with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain
Knighted (1944) โ For his services to medicine and science
Fellow of the Royal Society โ Elected in 1943
Honorary Degrees from 25 Universities โ A testament to his global impact
The Fleming Museum โ His laboratory at St Mary's Hospital is now a museum dedicated to his legacy

Fleming's journey was one of extraordinary observation and quiet humility. Born on a Scottish farm, he rose to become one of the most celebrated scientists in history. He was known for his modest and unassuming nature; despite his global fame, he remained a shy man who never sought the limelight . The sculptor E. Roland Bevan, who created the famous bronze bust of Fleming, had ample opportunity to study his features, as he was his snooker partner at the Chelsea Arts Club for many years . Fleming's discovery of penicillin was not a moment of sudden brilliance but the result of a prepared mindโhe was able to recognise the significance of what he saw because he had been searching for antibacterial substances for years. He famously cautioned about the overuse of antibiotics, warning that bacteria could develop resistance if they were used improperlyโa prescient observation that remains a major challenge in medicine today . He died of a heart attack on 11 March 1955 and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral, a fitting tribute to a man who changed the world .
