He was made a lieutenant general soon after .

Cumberland's greatest triumph came on 16 April 1746, when he led the Government army to victory over Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite forces at Culloden Moor, Inverness-shire . The battle was decisive, with around 1,000 Scots killed . In the aftermath, he showed no mercy. His soldiers were given orders to hunt down the rebels and execute them, pillaging the Highland countryside and burning clansmen's huts . For this, he earned the nickname "Butcher" Cumberland .

His father, George II, repudiated the agreement and dismissed him . He resigned all his commissions and never again held active military command . He suffered a stroke in 1760 and died in 1765 .
