Gonville Bromhead was born on 29 August 1845 in Versailles, France . He was educated at the Magnus Grammar School in Newark, Nottinghamshire, where he was a talented cricketer and excelled at boxing, wrestling, and singlestick . At 1.78 metres tall and stockily built, he was a natural athlete and a popular officer .

He enlisted as an Ensign in the 24th Regiment of Foot on 20 April 1867 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 28 October 1871 . In 1878, his battalion was ordered to South Africa, and by January 1879, Bromhead's B Company was stationed at Rorke's Drift, a remote mission station on the Buffalo River .

On 22 January 1879, news arrived that the British camp at Isandlwana had been overwhelmed by a Zulu army of 4,000 warriors, who were now advancing on Rorke's Drift . The tiny garrisonโ€”just 139 menโ€”was commanded by Bromhead and Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers . Against all odds, they refused to retreat. They constructed barricades from mealie bags and biscuit boxes, loopholed the hospital walls, and prepared for the onslaught .

The Zulus attacked in wave after wave, and the fighting was brutal and close-quarters. Bromhead was at the forefront of the defence, leading bayonet charges and using his revolver with deadly aim while encouraging his men "not to waste one round" . At one point, a Zulu warrior jumped over the barricade, intending to spear Bromhead, but was driven back by Private Frederick Hitch . The battle raged through the night, and by the early hours, the Zulus had lost 371 men and departed . For his extraordinary gallantry, Bromhead was awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military honour .
