    VASCO DA GAMA BUST

Vasco da Gama (c. 1460–1524) was a Portuguese explorer best known for being the first European to reach India by sea. His landmark voyages opened a direct maritime route between Europe and Asia, permanently transforming global trade and launching the Portuguese Empire's dominance in the East.Key MilestonesFirst Voyage (1497–1499)

Da Gama departed Lisbon with four ships. He sailed far out into the Atlantic to catch favorable winds, successfully rounding the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa.

Continuing up the African coast, he crossed the Indian Ocean and arrived in Calicut (Kozhikode), India, in May 1498.Second Voyage (1502): To protect Portuguese trading interests and avenge the deaths of Portuguese settlers, da Gama returned to India. He commanded a heavily armed fleet of 20 ships, aggressively bombarding Calicut and forcefully establishing Portuguese naval supremacy in the region.Viceroyalty and Death (1524):

In recognition of his achievements, he was named Viceroy of India by King John III. He arrived in Goa in September 1524, but died of illness just a few months later in Cochin.Historical SignificanceWhile his voyages facilitated massive international commerce and wealth for Portugal, his legacy is also marked by conflict. Da Gama's expeditions introduced a period of intense European colonialism and brutal naval dominance in the Indian Ocean.
