Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud was born on 20 October 1854 in Charleville, in the Ardennes region of France . He was a brilliant and rebellious student, and at the age of fifteen, he won a prize for a Latin poem . By sixteen, he was writing the poems that would make him famous, including The Drunken Boat (Le Bateau ivre), a visionary and hallucinatory work that marked the beginning of his poetic revolution . At the age of seventeen, he ran away to Paris, where he was taken in by the poet Paul Verlaine, beginning a tumultuous and passionate relationship . In 1873, after a violent argument, Verlaine shot Rimbaud, wounding him in the wrist; the incident ended their relationship and led to Verlaine's imprisonment . That same year, Rimbaud published A Season in Hell (Une Saison en Enfer), a work of intense, self-revelatory poetry that would become a cornerstone of modern literature . He stopped writing poetry at the age of twenty and spent his remaining years traveling the world, working as a trader in Arabia and Africa . He died on 10 November 1891 in Marseille, at the age of 37, leaving behind a small but revolutionary body of work.
Key Works:
A Season in Hell (1873) โ His masterpiece, a work of intense self-examination and poetic innovation
Illuminations (1886) โ A collection of prose poems of extraordinary visionary power, published posthumously
The Drunken Boat (1871) โ A visionary poem that established his reputation as a revolutionary poet
Poรฉsies (1872) โ A collection of his early poems, including the famous "Vowels" (Voyelles)
Letters โ His letters are a key source for understanding his radical poetics, most notably his "Letter of the Seer" (1871)

Rimbaud's journey was one of extraordinary genius and self-destruction. He was a prodigy, a rebel, and a visionary. He abandoned his family and his native country to live the life of a vagabond poet, and his work was a radical departure from the conventions of the 19th century. His theory of the "derangement of the senses" was a call for a new kind of poetry that would explore the unconscious and the irrational. He influenced generations of poets, including the Symbolists, the Surrealists, and the Beat poets, and his work remains a touchstone for artistic rebellion.
