Franรงois d'Angoulรชme was born on 12 September 1494 at the Chรขteau de Cognac . He was the son of Charles, Count of Angoulรชme, and Louise of Savoy, and was not initially destined for the throneโhe was a twice-cadet branch of the Valois family . However, King Louis XII saw all his male heirs die one after another, and in 1499, Franรงois was made Duke of Valois and called "Monsieur le Dauphin" . On 1 January 1515, he became Franรงois I, King of France .
His reign was defined by both military ambition and extraordinary cultural patronage. His first great victory came at the Battle of Marignano in 1515, where he defeated the Swiss and captured Milan, earning him the title "Le Roi Chevalier" (The Knight King) . However, his rivalry with the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V brought periods of devastating defeat, including his capture at the Battle of Pavia in 1525, where he was taken prisoner and held in Madrid . Despite these setbacks, he remained a warrior king at heart, constantly travelling on horseback through his kingdom, speaking directly to his subjects: "My friends, my beloved ones" .
Key Achievements:
Patron of the Renaissance โ He invited Leonardo da Vinci to France and brought the Mona Lisa to the French court
Architectural Vision โ He built the Chรขteau de Chambord, rebuilt the Louvre, and transformed the Chรขteau de Fontainebleau
Founder of the Collรจge de France (1530) โ Established the "Collรจge des lecteurs royaux," which later became the Collรจge de France, promoting humanist scholarship
Military Campaigns โ Victorious at the Battle of Marignano (1515), but defeated and captured at Pavia (1525)
Founder of Le Havre (1517) โ Established the port city, now one of France's major harbours
Legal Reform โ The Ordinance of Montpellier (1537) required printers to deposit their publications, laying the foundation for the modern legal deposit system

Franรงois I's journey was one of extraordinary energy and vision. Born in a castle in Cognac, he rose to become the most powerful king in Christendom, only to find himself locked in a bitter rivalry with the Emperor Charles V. He was a king who led from the frontโat Marignano, he was a triumphant warrior; at Pavia, a humiliated prisoner. Yet his passion for art and learning was equally fierce. His court was a centre of Renaissance brilliance, where he welcomed poets like Clรฉment Marot, painters like Rosso Fiorentino, and scholars from across Europe. He even wrote over two hundred poems himself. He laid the foundations of the French royal painting collection, the core of what is now the Louvre .

He founded the Collรจge de France โ A symbol of his commitment to humanist learning
He laid the foundations for the Louvre collection โ He commissioned works by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian
He began French exploration of the New World โ He sponsored Jacques Cartier's voyages to Canada
He strengthened the French monarchy โ Though his reign was marked by war, he resisted the Habsburg encirclement of France
