The most famous highwayman in English history. ๐๐ฉ This distinguished bust captures Richard "Dick" Turpin (1705โ1739) โ the English highwayman whose exploits have been romanticised and mythologised for nearly three centuries . A violent butcher turned criminal who terrorised the roads of Essex and Yorkshire, Turpin's execution in York in 1739 was only the beginning of his legend. Transformed by Victorian novelist William Harrison Ainsworth into a dashing gentleman of the road, Turpin became the archetypal highwayman, forever immortalised in penny dreadfuls, ballads, and popular culture . The myth of his overnight ride from London to York on his trusty steed Black Bess (a feat actually performed by another highwayman, John "Swift Nick" Nevison, some 30 years earlier) has cemented his place in English folklore . Perfect for home offices, studies, history collections, and lovers of English folklore and true crime.

Richard Turpin was born in Hempstead, Essex, around 1705 and apprenticed as a butcher . He soon found it easier to steal cattle than buy them legitimately, and his criminal career escalated rapidly . By the early 1730s, he had joined the notorious Gregory Gang (also known as the Essex gang), a group of deer thieves who turned to violent housebreaking .
The Brutal Reality:
Violent raids โ The gang would barge into homes, bind the occupants, and terrorise them into revealing hidden valuables
The Loughton attack (1735) โ Turpin and the gang threatened to lay an elderly widow across a fire unless she revealed her money, making off with ยฃ100
Farmer Lawrence โ Turpin beat a 70-year-old farmer, dragged him by his hair, and poured boiling water over him

"๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฆ๐๐ง" ๐:
After the Gregory Gang was broken up in 1735, Turpin turned to highway robbery . He was described in contemporary wanted posters as "about five feet nine inches high, very much marked with the small-pox... and broad about the shoulders" . His career as a highwayman lasted less than two years , but it was this brief period that would later be romanticised.
The Partnership with Tom King:
Met on the road โ Turpin attempted to rob Tom King, who replied: "What is this, dog eat dog?"
Joined forces โ They established a base in Epping Forest, robbing travellers who passed along the roads
King's death (1737) โ In a botched robbery, Turpin accidentally shot and killed his partner

The romanticised image of Dick Turpin is almost entirely fictional:
The Ride to York โ The famous 200-mile ride from London to York was actually performed by John "Swift Nick" Nevison in 1676, some 30 years before Turpin was born . It was not Turpin's ride at all.
Black Bess โ Turpin never owned a horse named Black Bess. The name was invented by novelist William Harrison Ainsworth .
The Romantic Hero โ Turpin was not a dashing, handsome rogue who robbed the rich to help the poor. He was a brutal and violent criminal, described as having "a quick temper and a violent streak" .

Turpin's downfall came in Yorkshire:
John Palmer alias โ Turpin fled to Yorkshire and assumed the name John Palmer, working as a horse thief
Arrested for shooting a chicken โ Palmer was arrested in October 1738 after shooting a domestic fowl and threatening its owner
Letter to his brother-in-law โ From York Castle, Turpin wrote to his family. The letter was intercepted, and his handwriting was recognised by a former schoolteacher
Convicted โ Found guilty of horse theft on 22 March 1739
Executed โ Hanged at Knavesmire, York, on 7 April 1739, aged 33
Paid mourners โ Turpin employed five men to act as mourners at his execution

Ainsworth's Rookwood (1834) โ The novel transformed Turpin into a gallant, heroic figure
Penny Dreadfuls โ Books like Black Bess; or, The Knight of the Road cemented the romantic image
Victorian theatre โ Turpin became a popular character in plays and ballads
Enduring icon โ He appears in countless films, television shows, and popular culture
