He entered military service in 1857, serving with distinction in the cavalry in Algeria and rising through the ranks to become a general . He served with great valour in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870โ€“1871, commanding a cavalry brigade at Sedan and the Army of the Loire .

Following his retirement in 1877, he devoted himself entirely to meteorology, a lifelong passion . He became a passionate promoter of the project to establish a scientific observatory at the summit of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the French Pyrenees . In August 1875, he began installing himself and his instruments at the Col de Sencours, below the summit, conducting observations . He spent eight years at the Col de Sencours, in challenging conditions, paving the way for the permanent observatory . His determination was such that his nickname was "the madman of the Pic" . He died on 14 March 1895, having devoted his final years to science .
