The man who measured the Earth. ๐๐ This distinguished bust captures Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276โ194 BCE) โ the Greek polymath whose remarkable achievements in mathematics, geography, and astronomy earned him the title "Beta" (second best) because he was second only to the greatest in every field . A chief librarian of the famous Library of Alexandria, he made one of history's most astonishing calculations: the circumference of the Earth using only a stick, a well, and his brilliant mind . Perfect for home offices, studies, scientific collections, and lovers of ancient Greek heritage.

Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276โ194 BCE) was one of the most brilliant minds of the ancient world. As chief librarian of the Library of Alexandria, he had access to the greatest collection of knowledge in the ancient world . His most famous achievement was calculating the circumference of the Earth with astonishing accuracy:
The Experiment:
The Sun's angle at noon โ In the Egyptian city of Syene (modern Aswan), the sun cast no shadow at the summer solstice, meaning the sun was directly overhead
The well โ At Syene, the sun's rays shone directly down a deep well, illuminating the water at the bottom
The shadow in Alexandria โ At the same time, a vertical stick in Alexandria cast a shadow, indicating the sun was at an angle of about 7.2 degrees (1/50th of a circle)
The Calculation:
Distance between Alexandria and Syene โ Approximately 5,000 stadia (about 800 km)
The math โ If 7.2 degrees equals 5,000 stadia, then 360 degrees equals 250,000 stadia
The result โ Approximately 40,000 km, within a few percent of the true circumference (40,075 km)!

Eratosthenes served as the chief librarian of the Library of Alexandria, the greatest repository of knowledge in the ancient world. In this role, he continued the work of earlier scholars and helped preserve the intellectual heritage of Greece and the Hellenistic world . His work in Alexandria represented a golden age of scientific inquiry and the culmination of Greek intellectual achievement.

"๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ก'๐ฌ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฒ" ๐ง :
Beyond his measurement of the Earth, Eratosthenes made contributions across multiple fields:
Mathematics โ Developed a method for finding prime numbers known as the "Sieve of Eratosthenes"
Geography โ Calculated the tilt of the Earth's axis (23.5ยฐ)
Cartography โ Created one of the first maps of the known world
Astronomy โ Calculated the distance from the Earth to the Sun and Moon
Literature โ Wrote extensively, though only fragments survive

Eratosthenes was nicknamed "Beta" because he was second best in every field:
Second to Homer in poetry
Second to Aristotle in philosophy
Second to Archimedes in mathematics
Second to Hipparchus in astronomy
The title was not an insult but a recognition of his extraordinary versatility and excellence across so many disciplines . He was, in many ways, the last of the great Greek polymaths.
