Jan Žižka z Trocnova a Kalicha — Bust

This bust depicts Jan Žižka z Trocnova a Kalicha (c. 1360–1424), a Bohemian military commander and one of the most iconic figures of the Hussite Wars. The sculpture is inspired by one of the most popular and recognizable depictions of Jan Žižka, particularly distinguished by his imposing headwear, beard, and the covering over his lost eye.

The bust aims to preserve this instantly recognizable appearance while adapting it into a sculpture designed for 3D printing. His facial features are strongly defined, with a deeply sculpted beard and moustache, carefully shaped hair, and a broad medieval garment that reinforces the commanding presence of the character. His serious and determined expression directly evokes his role as a military leader.

Jan Žižka is regarded as one of the most remarkable military commanders of the 15th century. A supporter of the Hussite movement following the death of reformer Jan Hus, he became one of the principal leaders of the Hussite forces during the conflicts between Bohemia and the Imperial and Catholic armies.

He became particularly famous for his innovative use of fortified war wagons, which allowed his troops to withstand forces that were often larger and more heavily equipped. He was also an early and effective adopter of firearms on European battlefields.

Already blind in one eye before the Hussite Wars, Žižka eventually lost the sight of his remaining eye as well. Remarkably, he continued to command his armies despite becoming completely blind. His military reputation is further strengthened by the tradition that he was never defeated in a battle under his command.

This bust pays tribute to an extraordinary figure of medieval European history: a commander whose distinctive appearance, military ingenuity and determination made him a symbol of resistance and one of the most celebrated figures in Czech history.
