Morse was born on 27 April 1791 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and educated at Yale College . He trained as a painter under Washington Allston in England and became a leading portrait artist, painting presidents John Adams and James Monroe, as well as the Marquis de Lafayette . He founded the National Academy of Design in 1826 and served as its president until 1845 . His portraits are renowned for their technical competence and bold rendering of character .

In 1832, while returning by ship from studying art in Europe, Morse conceived the idea of an electric telegraph after hearing a conversation about electromagnetism . He developed a working model by 1835 and, with partners Leonard Gale and Alfred Vail, created the system of dots and dashes that became known as the Morse Code .
