Edward Jenner was born on 17 May 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, the eighth of nine children of the local vicar . At age 14, he was apprenticed to a surgeon, later training in London under the renowned anatomist John Hunter, who famously advised him: "Don't think, try" . Returning to Berkeley in 1772, he spent most of his career as a country doctor, observing the local folk belief that milkmaids who contracted cowpox were immune to the far more deadly smallpox .
Key Achievements:
The First Vaccine (1796) โ Inoculated 8-year-old James Phipps with cowpox pus, then proved the boy was immune to smallpox
The Word "Vaccination" โ Coined from the Latin vacca (cow), describing his new procedure
Worldwide Eradication โ In 1980, the WHO declared smallpox eradicated, a direct legacy of his work
Parliamentary Grants โ Awarded ยฃ10,000 in 1802 and ยฃ20,000 in 1806 for his contributions

Jenner's genius lay in his rigorous testing of a folk belief. Noting that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox rarely fell victim to smallpox โ one of the greatest killers of the era, particularly among children โ he hypothesized that infection with the milder disease conferred immunity . In 1796, he took pus from cowpox blisters on the hand of milkmaid Sarah Nelmes and inoculated 8-year-old James Phipps. When the boy was later exposed to smallpox, he did not develop the disease .
He repeated the experiment on several other children, including his own 11-month-old son, before publishing his findings in 1798 . The paper, An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae, was initially rejected by the Royal Society as too revolutionary .

Jenner faced fierce opposition. Critics, particularly among the clergy, denounced the use of material from diseased animals as "repulsive and ungodly" . A famous 1802 satirical cartoon by James Gillray depicted people sprouting cow's heads after vaccination . Yet the overwhelming evidence of protection won out. Vaccination soon became widespread, and in 1853 the British government made it compulsory . In 1858, a bronze statue of Jenner was unveiled in Trafalgar Square by Prince Albert, before being moved to Kensington Gardens in 1862 .

He was also a naturalist โ He studied the migration of birds and presented his observations to the Royal Society in 1823, the year of his death
He named the process "vaccination" โ After the Latin word for cow, vacca
His experiment was not unique โ Others, including Dorset farmer Benjamin Jesty, had vaccinated with cowpox as early as 1774, but Jenner was the first to prove immunity and promote the procedure scientifically
He predicted eradication โ Jenner foresaw the worldwide elimination of smallpox
He died of a stroke โ On 26 January 1823, at age 73, in his birthplace of Berkeley
