The stargazer who mapped a continent. ๐บ๏ธ๐ This distinguished bust captures David Thompson (1770โ1857) โ the English-Canadian fur trader, surveyor, and cartographer whose maps of western North America were so accurate they remained in use well into the 20th century . Walking or paddling over 80,000 kilometres through uncharted wilderness, Thompson mapped nearly 4 million square kilometres of North America โ a feat that has led historians to call him "the greatest land geographer who ever lived" . Perfect for home offices, studies, exploration history collections, and lovers of Canadian heritage.

David Thompson was born in London, England in 1770 and at age 14 was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company, sent to Canada to work in the fur trade . He learned astronomy and mathematics from a company surveyor and spent so much time examining the sun and stars that he lost sight in one eye . Yet this one-eyed, limping man mapped more territory than any other European explorer of his age.
The Numbers:
80,000 kilometres โ Walked or paddled over his career
3.9 million square kilometres โ Land mass he mapped
27 years โ Spent exploring and surveying the west
1812 Map โ His greatest achievement, so accurate it remained the basis for many Canadian government maps 100 years later

"๐๐จ๐จ-๐๐จ๐จ-๐๐ข๐ง๐ญ" โ ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ณ๐๐ซ ๐:
Native peoples gave Thompson the name "Koo-Koo-Sint," or "Stargazer," because of his constant observations of the sun, moon, and stars with his surveying instruments . When word spread that the Stargazer was approaching a tribe's territory, chiefs would sometimes travel for days to meet him and urge him to visit their villages .
His Response:
"Both Canadians and Indians often inquired of me why I observed the Sun, and sometimes the Moon, in the day time, and passed whole nights with my instruments looking at the Moon and Stars. I told them it was to determine the distance and direction from the place I observed to other places; neither the Canadians nor the Indians believed me."

Thompson's career mirrored the expansion of the Canadian west:
1784 โ Arrived in Churchill, Manitoba as an apprentice clerk
1797 โ Left the Hudson's Bay Company for the rival North West Company
1799 โ Married Charlotte Small, a Mรฉtis woman; they had 13 children and remained together for 58 years
1811 โ Became the first European to explore the Columbia River from source to mouth
1812 โ Returned to Montreal, his exploring days over

Through all his hardships, Thompson recorded "A fine day" repeatedly in his journals, even when it was sleeting . A devout Christian, respectful of Native peoples, and a man of unwavering determination, Thompson stands as one of history's most remarkable explorers. Yet he died in poverty and obscurity in 1857, his achievements unrecognized until decades after his death .
