The lens-grinder who saw God in nature. ๐๐ง This distinguished bust captures Baruch Spinoza (1632โ1677) โ the Dutch philosopher whose radical ideas transformed modern thought and whose identification of God with nature ("Deus sive Natura") made him one of history's most controversial thinkers . Excommunicated from the Jewish community of Amsterdam at age 24 for "abominable heresies" , he spent his life grinding lenses for optical instruments , producing works that would influence the Enlightenment, the Romantic Age, and modern secularism . Perfect for home offices, studies, philosophical collections, and lovers of rationalist thought.

Baruch Spinoza was born on 24 November 1632 in Amsterdam, into a family of Portuguese-Jewish refugees fleeing persecution by the Inquisition . He received a traditional Jewish education, but his views soon took unconventional directions . On 27 July 1656, at age 23, Spinoza was excommunicated by the Sephardic community for the practice of "abominable heresies" and "monstrous deeds" .
The Ban โ He was offered 1000 florins to keep quiet, but refused . His "horrible heresies" included his identification of God with nature โ a view that would later become known as pantheism .

"๐๐๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐" โ ๐๐จ๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐ฟ:
Spinoza's most famous and radical idea was his identification of God with nature:
"God, or Nature" โ His Latin phrase Deus sive Natura is the cornerstone of his philosophy
God has infinite qualities โ Of which we can perceive only two: thought and extension
Everything that exists is God โ But God is more than the sum of what exists
A "pantheistic view" โ He believed that mastery over nature and the perfection of man was the purpose of knowledge
Not an atheist โ Though he was often reviled as one, Spinoza's God is not the conventional Judaeo-Christian God

Spinoza's greatest work was published only after his death:
Ethica โ His masterpiece, based on rigorous geometry-like definitions, axioms, propositions and corollaries
The highest good โ He asserted it was knowledge of God, capable of freeing people from tyranny by the passions, fear, and resignation to destiny
True blessedness โ Found through understanding
"The most abstract work" โ A highly rational approach that openly expresses none of the love of nature one might expect from someone who identified God with nature
โ
"๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ฎ๐ฌ" ๐ก:
Spinoza refused all rewards and honours:
Gave away his inheritance โ Keeping only a bedstead for himself
Lens-grinder โ Earned his humble living by grinding lenses, a trade that likely contributed to his death
Declined a chair at Heidelberg โ Fearing his acceptance would curtail his "freedom to philosophize"
Visited by Leibniz โ The great philosopher visited him in 1676
Died alone in The Hague (1677) โ Probably from consumption aggravated by fine glass dust
Spinoza's influence was immense:
The Enlightenment โ His work stimulated the development of modern atheism and biblical criticism
The Romantic Age โ Romantics, attracted by his identification of God with Nature, rescued him from oblivion
Modern secularism โ His influence has been tremendous
"The first modern Jew" โ His rupture with traditional Jewish beliefs elevated him to a prominent place in genealogies of Jewish modernity
