Michel de Montaigne was born in 1533 at the Chรขteau de Montaigne in Pรฉrigord, France, into a wealthy and cultivated family. He studied law in Bordeaux and Toulouse and served as a magistrate and later as Mayor of Bordeaux. In 1571, following the death of his closest friend, รtienne de La Boรฉtie, he retired to his estate to devote himself to reading and writing. The result was the Essays, first published in 1580, a collection of reflections on a vast range of subjects โ from friendship, education, and death to thumbs, smells, and cannibals. He continued to revise and expand the Essays until his death in 1592. His work influenced Shakespeare, Descartes, Pascal, Nietzsche, and countless others.
Key Works:
Essays โ His masterpiece, in three books
Apology for Raymond Sebond โ His longest and most philosophical essay
On Friendship โ A profound meditation on his bond with La Boรฉtie
On Cannibals โ A reflection on cultural relativism
On Experience โ His final essay, a summation of his philosophy

Montaigne's journey from a country gentleman to one of the most influential writers in history is a testament to the power of self-examination and intellectual honesty. He was a man of moderate habits and deep curiosity, who wrote not to teach but to understand himself. He was a sceptic who doubted his own knowledge, yet he never lost faith in the possibility of wisdom. He was a Catholic in a time of religious war, yet he advocated tolerance and moderation. His legacy is one of intellectual humility and enduring relevance.
