Rosalind Elsie Franklin was born on 25 July 1920 in London, England . A brilliant student, she decided to become a scientist at age fifteen and attended St Paul's Girls' School before studying physical chemistry at Newnham College, Cambridge, graduating in 1941 . After graduating, she served as a London air raid warden during World War II and in 1942 joined the British Coal Utilisation Research Association, where her research on the physical chemistry of carbon and coal earned her a PhD from Cambridge in 1945 .

From 1947 to 1950, she worked in Paris at the State Chemical Laboratory, becoming an expert in X-ray diffraction technology . In 1951, she joined King's College London as a research fellow, where she applied X-ray diffraction to the study of DNA . Under her direction, she and her graduate student Raymond Gosling captured the now-famous "Photo 51" in May 1952, a remarkable X-ray diffraction image that revealed the helical structure of DNA . Without her knowledge, this photograph and her research data were shared with James Watson and Francis Crick at Cambridge, who used it to build their double-helix model in 1953 .

    Key Contributions:

Photo 51 (1952) โ€“ The iconic X-ray diffraction image that provided key evidence for the DNA double helix

Discovery of DNA Forms โ€“ She identified two forms of DNA, A-DNA and B-DNA, and established the humidity-mediated reversibility between them

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Research โ€“ She made significant contributions to understanding the structure of RNA viruses, laying the foundation for structural virology

Polio Virus Research โ€“ She began studying the poliovirus structure shortly before her death; her collaborators completed the work

Pioneering X-ray Crystallographer โ€“ Her work on coal and carbon, and her expertise in X-ray diffraction, were groundbreaking

Legacy of Scientific Excellence โ€“ Her contributions are now widely recognised, with busts of her displayed at Newnham College, Cambridge, and Trinity College Dublin's Long Room

Franklin's journey was one of extraordinary scientific achievement in a world dominated by men. As a woman in science in the 1950s, she faced significant barriers, including being barred from the university dining room and men-only pubs . Despite this, she became one of the most meticulous and innovative experimental scientists of her generation. Had she survived, she would have undoubtedly been one of the most renowned female scientists of her era . She died on 16 April 1958 from ovarian cancer at the age of 37, likely as a result of inadequate radiation safety measures . Her tombstone reads: "Her research and discoveries on viruses remain of lasting benefit to mankind" . In 2020, on the centenary of her birth, a new bust of Franklin was installed in the Long Room of Trinity College Dublin, one of four sculptures representing women scholars, acknowledging her monumental contributions to science .

Rosalind Franklin's influence on science, medicine, and the pursuit of knowledge is immeasurable:

She provided the key evidence for the DNA double helix โ€“ Her X-ray work was essential to one of the most transformative advances of the 20th century

She pioneered structural virology โ€“ Her work on tobacco mosaic virus and polio virus laid the foundation for modern virology

She was a master of X-ray crystallography โ€“ Her images were described as "among the most beautiful X-ray photographs ever taken"

She overcame gender barriers โ€“ Her perseverance in a male-dominated field continues to inspire women in science

She is remembered in monuments and museums โ€“ A bust of Franklin was commissioned in 1961 and is displayed at Newnham College; another bust was installed at Trinity College Dublin in 2020

Her legacy endures โ€“ She is celebrated as one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century

This bust captures Rosalind Franklin in her most recognisable form, inspired by the famous sculptural depictions of the scientist, including the 1961 bronze bust by sculptor Vera Klute which depicts Franklin wearing a crystal necklace, referencing her use of X-ray crystallography :

The Distinguished, Intellectual Features โ€“ A face embodying the precision and determination of a pioneering scientist

The Crystal Necklace โ€“ A tribute to her groundbreaking work in X-ray crystallography

The Focused, Observant Gaze โ€“ Reflecting her meticulous and analytical nature

She was the first woman to graduate from Cambridge โ€“ Although as a woman she was not allowed to graduate officially in 1941; she received her PhD in 1945

She was a London air raid warden during WWII โ€“ She served her community while pursuing her scientific career

Her "Photo 51" was shared without her knowledge โ€“ It was shown to Watson and Crick, who used it to build their model

She came very close to solving the DNA structure herself โ€“ She had already prepared a manuscript by 17 March 1953, one day before seeing the Watson-Crick model

She died at just 37 โ€“ From ovarian cancer, likely from radiation exposure

The 1962 Nobel Prize was awarded to Watson, Crick, and Wilkins โ€“ She could not be included as the prize is not awarded posthumously

A bronze bust of her is displayed at Newnham College โ€“ Commissioned in 1961 and reinstated in the college courtyard in 2022

A new bust of her was unveiled at Trinity College Dublin in 2020 โ€“ It is displayed in the Long Room alongside other scholars
