Panas Yakovych Rudchenko โ Panas Myrny โ was born on 13 May 1849 in Myrhorod, Poltava gubernia, into the family of a county treasury accountant . From a young age, he was deeply influenced by the works of Taras Shevchenko, who shaped his worldview and literary preferences . After limited formal education, he began working as a petty official at the age of fourteen, a career that would sustain him for 37 years while he devoted his evenings to his true passionโwriting .
In 1871, he settled in Poltava, where he worked in the provincial treasury chamber and, in 1903, moved to the Kobyshchany estate, where he lived until his death . His literary activity was a source of real joy; he would sit at his desk in the evening and enthusiastically devote himself to his hobby . Shortly before his death, he requested that his real name not be advertised, considering it "unworthy of those glorifications" created around his pseudonym . He died on 28 January 1920 in Poltava .
Key Works:
Do Oxen Low When Mangers Are Full? (1880) โ His best-known novel, a socio-psychological chronicle co-authored with his brother Ivan Rudchenko (pseudonym Ivan Bilyk), covering nearly a century of Ukrainian village history from serfdom to the post-reform era
Poviia (The Loose Woman, 1884) โ A socio-psychological novel describing new social processes caused by the reforms of 1861
Lykho davnie i s'ohochasne (Ancient and Contemporary Evil, 1903) โ A story portraying the changed social dynamics of the village after the abolition of serfdom
Sered stepiv (Among the Steppes, 1903) โ A companion story exploring similar themes
Lymerivna (The Daughter of the Harness Maker, 1883) โ His most popular drama, first published in 1892
Translations โ He translated Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha and William Shakespeare's King Lear

Panas Myrny's journey from a small-town official to the master of Ukrainian literary realism is one of extraordinary dedication and creative achievement. Born in Myrhorod, he rose through the ranks of the tsarist civil service while secretly writing some of the most significant works in Ukrainian literature . His deep understanding of social injustice, the harsh life of the peasantry, and the complexities of human psychology made him a pioneer of the socio-psychological novel in Ukraine . He was also a key figure in the cultural life of Poltava, helping to organize the first congress of the Ukrainian intellectual elite in 1903, which brought together Lesia Ukrainka, Olena Pchilka, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, and other luminaries . His estate in Kobyshchany became a centre of Ukrainian cultural life, and today it houses the Poltava Literary and Memorial Museum of Panas Myrny .
