David Livingstone was born on 19 March 1813 in Blantyre, Scotland, into a poor and deeply religious Christian family . From the age of 10, he worked 14-hour days in a local cotton mill, yet he devoted his evenings to education, eventually studying medicine and theology in Glasgow . In 1840, he was ordained as a missionary with the London Missionary Society and set sail for Africa, driven by a vision to combine his Christian faith with his interest in science and medicine .

His achievements as an explorer were extraordinary. He was the first European to reach Lake Ngami (1849), the first to reach Luanda from the interior (1854), and the first to cross the continent from west to east (1856) . In 1855, he encountered and named Victoria Falls in honour of Queen Victoria . He advanced the use of quinine to fight malaria and campaigned tirelessly against the East African slave trade . He died on 1 May 1873 in central Africa, still in search of the source of the Nile . His body was brought back to Britain and buried in Westminster Abbey .
