Seizing the opportunity, Erik set sail west in search of land that had been sighted by Gunnbjรถrn Ulfsson earlier in the 10th century . He rounded the southern tip of Greenland and explored the western coast for two years, naming places as he went to claim ownership . He chose a promising fjord for his manor house, which he called Brattahlid ("Steep Slope") . He named the land "Greenland" to attract settlers, believing that "people would be attracted to go there if it had a favourable name" .
