His practical inventions included the water-screw for irrigation, catapults and grappling devices for military defence, and compound pulley systems for moving large masses. According to Plutarch, however, Archimedes viewed his mechanical inventions merely as "diversions of geometry at play" – his true passion lay in theoretical mathematics.

His most famous legend tells of King Hieron II's request to determine whether a crown was solid gold. Archimedes made his legendary discovery that a solid displaces a volume of liquid equal to its own volume, supposedly causing him to leap from his bath and run naked through the streets crying "Eureka!" (I have found it). His works, including On Floating Bodies and The Method, laid the foundations for hydrostatics and integral calculus, and his approach to determining pi was followed by everyone until the 17th century. He was killed by a Roman soldier during the conquest of Syracuse in 212 BCE – his last words are reported to have been "Do not disturb my circles!".
