Timur was born on 9 April 1336 in Kesh (now Shahrisabz, Uzbekistan), near Samarkand . He was a member of the Barlas, a Mongol tribe that had adopted Turkic culture and Islam. Born into a family of minor nobility, he suffered a significant injury to his right arm and leg in his youth, which earned him the Persian epithet "Timur-e Lang" (Timur the Lame), which became "Tamerlane" in the West . Despite this disability, he rose to become the most powerful ruler in Asia.
Between 1370 and 1405, he conquered vast territories, defeating the Golden Horde in Russia, the Delhi Sultanate in India, and the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia . His most famous victory was the Battle of Ankara in 1402, where he captured the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I . He also sacked the cities of Damascus, Baghdad, and Delhi, leaving a trail of devastation and wealth. He died on 19 February 1405 while preparing to invade China, leaving behind an empire that would inspire his descendants, including his great-great-grandson, Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire .
Key Achievements:
Founder of the Timurid Empire โ A vast empire spanning Central Asia, Persia, Anatolia, and India
Battle of Ankara (1402) โ Defeated and captured the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I
Sack of Delhi (1398) โ Devastated the Delhi Sultanate and brought immense wealth to Samarkand
Patron of the Arts and Architecture โ Transformed Samarkand into a centre of Islamic culture and learning
Last of the Great Nomadic Conquerors โ He revived the legacy of Genghis Khan
Ancestor of the Mughal Empire โ His great-great-grandson Babur founded the Mughal dynasty in India

Timur's journey from a minor tribal leader to the most powerful ruler in Asia is one of the most remarkable stories of military ambition and state-building. Born into a world of Mongol successor states, he rose through the chaos of the post-Genghis world by military brilliance and political cunning . His armies were a coalition of Turkic and Mongol tribes, and his conquests were often marked by extreme brutality. Yet he was also a patron of the arts, building magnificent monuments, gardens, and mosques in his capital, Samarkand, creating a cultural renaissance that his descendants would carry to India, giving rise to the Mughal empire. As one historian noted, Timur's victims were "pious Muslims," and his mosques and madrasas "towered over the palaces of the kings, and the dead were raised from the dust" . His legacy as a patron of architecture and the arts continues to be celebrated in Uzbekistan today .
