Edward Henry Carson was born on 9 February 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, into a prosperous Protestant family . He was educated at Trinity College Dublin and called to the Irish Bar in 1877, rising rapidly to become one of the most formidable barristers of his era . He was called to the English Bar in 1893, and his legal brilliance brought him international fame .
His career reached its zenith in 1895 when he was retained by the Marquess of Queensberry to defend against Oscar Wilde's libel action. Carson's relentless cross-examination of Wilde secured the acquittal, contributed to Wilde's subsequent prosecution and imprisonment, and cemented Carson's reputation as the foremost advocate of his age . He served as Solicitor General for England and Wales (1900โ1905) and later as Attorney General (1915) .
In December 1916, Carson was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty, serving in David Lloyd George's wartime coalition until July 1917 . He was also a member of the war cabinet as Minister without Portfolio . He died on 22 October 1935 and was buried in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, following a state funeralโthe only person to have received that honour .

Carson's journey from the Dublin legal circuit to the highest offices of state was one of extraordinary talent and unwavering conviction. A master of the courtroom, his cross-examination of Oscar Wilde remains one of the most famous in legal history. Yet it was his political leadership that defined his legacy. As the "uncrowned king of Ulster," he mobilised Protestant opposition to Irish Home Rule, signing the Ulster Covenant in 1912 and raising the Ulster Volunteer Force to resist its imposition . Though ultimately disillusioned by the partition of Ireland, his leadership secured a place in the United Kingdom for Northern Ireland . A statue of Carson stands in the grounds of Stormont, Belfast, unveiled by Carson himself in 1932 .
