His early years as a parish priest were marked by his devotion to the poor, his pastoral care, and his writing of a simple catechism that would later become world-famous .

On 4 August 1903, he was elected Pope – a role he accepted with reluctance, believing himself unworthy of such a lofty office . His papal motto, Instaurare Omnia in Christo ("To renew all things in Christ"), defined his 11-year pontificate . He died on 20 August 1914, just days after the outbreak of the First World War, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII on 29 May 1954 .
