รlisabeth-Claude Jacquet was born in Paris in 1665 into a family of musicians and instrument builders . At just five years old, she performed before King Louis XIV at Versailles, singing and playing the harpsichord with such brilliance that the Sun King himself became her lifelong patron . She was soon taken into the court under the protection of Madame de Montespan, the king's mistress .
In 1684, she married Marin de La Guerre, a respected Parisian organist, and thereafter became known as รlisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre . Her first published collection, Piรจces de clavecin (1687), was remarkable not only for its beauty but because publication of harpsichord music was still rare in Franceโeven for male composers . Her crowning achievement came in 1694 with the premiere of Cรฉphale et Procris, making her the first woman in France to compose a performed opera .
Key Works:
Cรฉphale et Procris (1694) โ Her tragรฉdie en musique, the first opera composed by a woman in France
Piรจces de clavecin (1687) โ Her first published collection of harpsichord pieces, featuring the innovative "unmeasured prelude"
Sonates pour le violon et pour le clavecin (1707) โ A groundbreaking two-volume set juxtaposing French and Italian instrumental styles
Cantates franรงoises (1708, 1711, 1715) โ Sets of sacred and secular cantatas, demonstrating her dramatic use of French recitative
Te Deum (1721) โ A choral work celebrating the recovery of Louis XV, now lost

Jacquet de La Guerre's journey was one of extraordinary achievement in a world dominated by men. She was described by the Mercure galant, the journal of the French court, as "the marvel of our century" . Contemporary scholar Evrard Titon du Tillet wrote: "Never has a person of her sex had such great talent for the composition of music, and for the admirable manner in which she played on the harpsichord and on the organ" . She was not only a virtuoso performer and host of celebrated concerts in her Paris home, but also a composer of remarkable rangeโwriting for harpsichord, violin, voice, chorus, and the stage . Her influence on French music was so profound that one author rated her second only to Jean-Baptiste Lully among Baroque French composers .
