In the same year, he bought into the Ferme Générale, a private tax-collecting corporation that would ultimately seal his fate. In 1771, he married Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, who became his invaluable scientific collaborator, learning English to translate the work of British chemists and studying art and engraving to illustrate his experiments . In 1775, he was appointed a commissioner of the Royal Gunpowder and Saltpeter Administration, where he equipped a fine laboratory at the Paris Arsenal—a centre that attracted young chemists from across Europe .
