Vasyl Semenovych Stus was born on 6 January 1938 in the village of Rakhnovka, Vinnytsia region, Ukraine . He studied philology at the Donetsk Pedagogical Institute, and his first poems were published in 1959 . After graduating, he worked as a teacher, served in the army, and briefly edited the newspaper Sotsialistychnyi Donbas (Socialist Donbas) .

In 1963, he began studies at the Institute of Literature in Kyiv, but his participation in a protest denouncing the arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals that year led to his dismissal from the institute . He was arrested in 1972 along with fellow dissident writers Ivan Svitlychny and Yevhen Sverstiuk, and sentenced to five years in a labour camp and three years' exile . Returning to Kyiv in 1979, he joined the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, but was re-arrested just eight months later and sentenced to ten years in prison and five years of exile . He died on 4 September 1985 in a labour camp in Perm-36, after declaring a hunger strike in solitary confinement . He was buried in the camp cemetery under a grave marked 'Number 9', before his remains were moved to Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv in 1989 .
