In 1963, he was selected by NASA to be part of the third group of astronauts. He flew his first space mission on Gemini 10 in 1966, performing a spacewalk and achieving the first rendezvous with a second vehicle in orbit .

In 1969, he was assigned to Apollo 11 as Command Module Pilot. He remained in lunar orbit in the Command Module "Columbia" while Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the Moon. For 28 hours, he was alone, orbiting the Moon, cut off from all human contact, his only communication with Mission Control . He described the experience not as loneliness but as feeling "acutely aware of the fragility of the Earth and the vastness of space" . After the mission, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and as Director of the National Air and Space Museum . He passed away on 28 April 2021 at the age of 90 .
