George Frideric Handel was born on 23 February 1685 in Halle, Germany . He broke away from his family's expectations to seek his fortune in Italian opera, gaining first-hand experience of the latest Italian styles in Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples . A series of career moves brought him via Hanover to London, where he settled in 1712 and dominated the city's musical life for half a century.
His compositions form one of the peaks of creative achievement in the Baroque period, covering a remarkable range: full-scale Italian operas and English oratorios, including the immortal Messiah, but also shorter works such as the Water Music and the Coronation Anthem Zadok the Priest, which has been played at every British coronation since 1727. He also created two new musical genresโEnglish theatre oratorio and the organ concerto. He died a rich man on 14 April 1759 and was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.
Key Works:
Messiah (1741) โ His greatest oratorio, first performed in Dublin in 1742, and one of the most beloved works in Western music
Water Music (1717) โ A magnificent orchestral suite performed on the Thames for King George I
Music for the Royal Fireworks (1749) โ A celebratory work marking the peace of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle
Zadok the Priest (1727) โ The Coronation Anthem that has been sung at every British coronation since
Giulio Cesare (1724) โ One of his most celebrated Italian operas
Twelve Grand Concertos, Op. 6 โ The peak of the Baroque concerto grosso for stringed instruments

Handel's journey was one of extraordinary determination and creative power. Born in Germany to a family that reputedly tried to discourage his initial interest in music, he broke away to seek his fortune in Italian opera. He quickly made his mark in English church music as well as Italian opera, and eventually created two new musical genres. Despite turbulent periods in the musical and political life of London, including bankruptcy and a stroke in 1737, he reached a wider public through publications of his music, died a rich man and was buried in Westminster Abbey. As one scholar noted, his music was recognized as a reflection of the English national character, and his capacity for realizing the common mood was nowhere better shown than in the Music for the Royal Fireworks. His choruses have a power and effectiveness that have never been surpassed.

This bust captures George Frideric Handel in his most recognisable form, inspired by the famous 1738 statue by Louis-Franรงois Roubiliac, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The original statue was unprecedentedโthe first life-size marble depicting a living artist, portraying the composer in the guise of Orpheus, dressed informally, leaning on a pile of bound scores of his works:
The Distinguished, Expressive Features โ A face embodying the creative genius of the Baroque master
The Casual Cap and House Coat โ Reflecting the informal, intimate style of the original Roubiliac statue
The Confident, Inspired Gaze โ A tribute to a man who dominated London's musical life for half a century
The Classic Silhouette โ The timeless image of the master of oratorio
