George Frideric Handel was born on 23 February 1685 in Halle, Germany . He broke away from his family's expectations to seek his fortune in Italian opera, gaining first-hand experience of the latest Italian styles in Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples . A series of career moves brought him via Hanover to London, where he settled in 1712 and dominated the city's musical life for half a century.

His compositions form one of the peaks of creative achievement in the Baroque period, covering a remarkable range: full-scale Italian operas and English oratorios, including the immortal Messiah, but also shorter works such as the Water Music and the Coronation Anthem Zadok the Priest, which has been played at every British coronation since 1727. He also created two new musical genres—English theatre oratorio and the organ concerto. He died a rich man on 14 April 1759 and was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.
