Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen was born on 2 May 1892 in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocลaw, Poland), into an aristocratic Prussian military family . At the age of 11, he enrolled in military school, graduating as an Officer candidate in 1911 and joining a Uhlan Cavalry regiment . When the First World War broke out, he served as a cavalry reconnaissance officer on both the Eastern and Western Fronts . However, the advent of trench warfare made traditional cavalry operations obsolete, and Richthofen became bored and frustrated with his assignment to the army's supply branch . His interest in the Air Service had been aroused by an examination of a German aircraft, and he famously applied for a transfer, stating: "I have not gone to war in order to collect cheese and eggs, but for another purpose" .
In May 1915, he transferred to the Imperial German Army Air Service, initially serving as an observer on reconnaissance missions . His career took a decisive turn in August 1916 when the legendary German ace Oswald Boelcke, who had been impressed by Richthofen, recruited him to join the newly formed Jasta 2 . He scored his first confirmed victory on 17 September 1916 . In January 1917, he was appointed Commander of Jasta 11, and soon after, he painted his aircraft red โ a decision that would make him famous as the "Red Baron" .
He was awarded the Pour le Mรฉrite (the "Blue Max"), Germany's highest military honour, after his sixteenth victory . By the time of his death on 21 April 1918, he had achieved 80 confirmed aerial victories โ more than any other pilot of the Great War . He was just 25 years old . He was buried with full military honours by the British, a testament to the respect he commanded even among his enemies .
Key Achievements:
80 Aerial Victories โ The deadliest fighter ace of the First World War
Commander of Jasta 11 โ The famous "Flying Circus"
Pour le Mรฉrite (Blue Max) โ Germany's highest military honour
The Red Baron โ His iconic red aircraft made him a legend
Author โ He wrote an autobiography, The Red Battle Flyer, during his convalescence
Military Funeral โ He was buried with full military honours by the British

Richthofen's journey was one of extraordinary skill and dedication. He was a man who embodied the ideal of the warrior-knight, even in the brutal context of modern industrial warfare. His decision to paint his plane red was a deliberate challenge to his enemies, a declaration of his presence and his willingness to fight . He was a master tactician, but also a man of honour; he is said to have sent cigars to a downed British pilot . He was deeply affected by the death of his mentor, Oswald Boelcke, and later by a severe head wound he suffered in July 1917, which some believe affected his judgment in his final days . His death on 21 April 1918, over the Somme region, has been the subject of decades of debate, but his legend only grew from that moment.
