Lina Vasylivna Kostenko was born on 19 March 1930 in Rzhyshchiv, Kyiv Oblast . She studied at the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute and graduated with distinction from the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow in 1956 . Her first collections, Earthly Rays (1957), Sails (1958), and Journeys of the Heart (1961), became immensely popular but also drew criticism from Soviet authorities for their ideologically nonconformist spirit .

In the 1960s, she became a leading figure of the Sixtiers movement, a generation of Ukrainian intellectuals who challenged the constraints of socialist realism. After signing a letter of protest against the arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals in 1965, she was effectively silenced by the Soviet government . For nearly a decade, her works were banned from publication, and her name disappeared from the Soviet press. Yet she continued to write "for the drawer," producing some of her most powerful works during this time of persecution. Her historical novel in verse, Marusia Churai (1979), earned her the Shevchenko Prize in 1987 . She refused the title of Hero of Ukraine, preferring to remain independent of state honours . In 2022, she received the French Order of the Legion of Honour for her contribution to culture .
