Antonio Lรณpez de Santa Anna was born on 21 February 1794 in Xalapa, Veracruz, into a prosperous Spanish colonial family . He began his military career in the Spanish colonial army in 1810, fighting against the Mexican War of Independence . However, in 1821, he famously switched sides to support Agustรญn de Iturbide, who sought to establish an independent Mexico. His reputation was established at the Siege of Veracruz in 1822, and his military prowess and political ambition made him a central figure in the new republic . In 1833, he was elected president and for the next two decades, he was the dominant figure in Mexican politics, serving as president on no fewer than eleven occasions . He is most remembered for his role in the Texas Revolution, where he led the Mexican army against the Texan rebels, culminating in the Battle of the Alamo (1836) . He also fought in the Mexican-American War (1846โ1848), losing vast territories to the United States . He died in poverty in Mexico City on 21 June 1876 .
Key Achievements and Events:
President of Mexico (1833โ1855) โ Served eleven non-consecutive times, dominating the period
The Battle of the Alamo (1836) โ His most famous victory, a brutal suppression of the Texas revolt
The Pastry War (1838) โ He lost a leg fighting the French, which he later buried with full military honours
The Mexican-American War (1846โ1848) โ He lost Texas, California, and other territories to the United States
The Plan of Ayutla (1854) โ He was overthrown and went into exile, ending his political career
The "Napoleon of the West" โ He was a charismatic populist with a talent for self-promotion

Santa Anna's journey was one of extraordinary ambition and political survival. He was a charismatic figure who combined military success with a talent for populism and self-promotion, styling himself the "Napoleon of the West" . He was a master of political maneuvering, switching sides, and capitalising on crises. Yet his career was also marked by defeat, most notably the loss of vast territories to the United States. His treatment of his amputated leg was a bizarre piece of self-promotion: after losing his leg in battle, he gave it a state funeral complete with a coach and a eulogy . He died in obscurity, but his legacy is a central part of Mexico's 19th-century historyโa figure of great ambition and equally great failure.

Santa Anna's influence on Mexican history is profound and debated:
He dominated Mexican politics for over two decades โ The chaos of the early republic is personified in his career
He is a symbol of military ambition โ He was a charismatic figure, but one who often put his own ambitions above the national interest
He lost Texas and California to the United States โ The Mexican-American War was a devastating defeat
His career is a cautionary tale โ The "Napoleon of the West" ultimately died in poverty and exile
His legacy endures โ He remains a central, controversial figure in the history of independent Mexico
