"The courage and dignity he displayed during his reverses inspired pity and respect." ๐๐๏ธ This distinguished bust captures Francesco II (1836โ1894) โ the last King of the Two Sicilies, whose brief reign from 1859 to 1861 ended with the fall of the Bourbon dynasty and the unification of Italy. A monarch of complex character โ weak and vacillating in rule, yet courageous and dignified in defeat. A symbol of a lost kingdom, the tragedy of history, and the end of an era. Perfect for home offices, studies, libraries, and lovers of Italian history, royalty, and the Risorgimento.

Francesco II was born on 16 January 1836 in Naples, the only son of Ferdinand II and Maria Christina of Savoy . He was the last of the Bourbon kings of Naples, heir to a kingdom that had ruled Southern Italy for centuries. His full name was Francesco d'Assisi Maria Leopoldo . His education had been neglected, and he grew into a man of weak character, greatly influenced by his stepmother, Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, and the reactionary court set known as the Camarilla .
He ascended to the throne on 22 May 1859, at the age of 23, inheriting not only the crown but also a kingdom perched on the edge of collapse . In February 1859, he had married Duchess Maria Sophia in Bavaria, a princess of the royal Bavarian house of Wittelsbach and younger sister of Empress Elisabeth "Sissi" of Austria .
His reign lasted just 22 months. In May 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Sicily with his Expedition of the Thousand and conquered the island with astonishing ease . Francesco, after long hesitation, finally granted a constitution, but it was too late. He fled Naples on 6 September 1860, taking refuge in the fortress of Gaeta with his wife and court . There, the royal pairโand particularly Maria Sophieโdisplayed great courage and fortitude during a three-month siege. But on 13 February 1861, Gaeta capitulated. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was no more .

Francesco II's story is one of tragedy and the relentless tide of history. Born into a dynasty that had ruled Naples for centuries, he was ill-prepared for the forces that would sweep him from power. The historian's verdict is harsh: he was weak-minded, stupid, and vacillating, often paralyzed by a fear of making irrevocable choices . Yet, in his defeat, he showed qualities of dignity and courage that inspired sympathy . The fall of Gaeta marked the end of the Bourbon kingdom and the first major event of Italian unification . The King and Queen spent their remaining years in exile, a relic of the ancien rรฉgime, never to return to their lost kingdom.
