Francis I was born on 19 August 1777 in Naples, the son of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Carolina of Austria . He was also the nephew of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, the last King and Queen of France . In 1778, following the death of his elder brother Carlo, he inherited the title of Crown Prince and Duke of Calabria . In 1796, he married Archduchess Maria Clementina of Austria, daughter of Emperor Leopold II . After her death in 1801, he married Maria Isabella of Spain, daughter of King Charles IV . During the Napoleonic Wars, the Bourbon family fled Naples for Sicily in 1806 . There, Lord William Bentinck, the British resident, established a new constitution and appointed Francis regent in 1812 . He succeeded to the throne on 4 January 1825 upon his father's death and reigned until his own death on 8 November 1830 .
Key Achievements:
Withdrawal of Austrian Forces (1827) โ He successfully secured the removal of Austrian occupation troops, relieving a significant financial burden on the kingdom
Economic and Industrial Reform โ He expanded the fleet, established insurance companies, and encouraged industry with biennial exhibitions and prizes
Infrastructure Development โ He drained lakes, constructed roads, erected the Ponte de' Gigli, and built the Town Hall in Naples
Public Works and Culture โ He resumed excavations at Pompeii, promoted the study of Herculaneum papyri, opened hospitals, and founded an orphanage in Palermo
Royal Order of Francis I โ He established this meritocratic order to reward civil, military, and cultural achievements
Amnesty and Pardons โ He granted amnesty to deserting soldiers and commuted sentences for political prisoners

Francis's journey was one of royal duty and political complexity. He witnessed the upheaval of the Napoleonic Wars, the exile of his family to Sicily, and the restoration of Bourbon rule . As regent in Sicily, he was responsible for granting the 1812 constitution under British influence, giving rise to his early reputation for liberal sympathies . However, upon ascending the throne in 1825, he pursued a more conservative course, though his reign was marked by a genuine commitment to infrastructure, industry, and welfare . Despite facing a revolutionary outbreak in Cilento in 1828, his legacy is increasingly seen as one of quiet progress and devotion to his kingdom .
