George Orson Welles was born on 6 May 1915 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. A child prodigy, he was educated at the Todd School in Illinois, where he staged theatrical experiments and had his first radio experience. He made his stage debut at the Gate Theatre in Dublin in 1931 at just 16 years old. At 21, he was directing high-profile stage productions for the Federal Theatre Project, including a celebrated 1936 adaptation of Macbeth with an African-American cast. He co-founded the Mercury Theatre with John Houseman, producing innovative Broadway productions. In 1938, his radio adaptation of H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds caused widespread panic, rocketing him to international fame. His first film, Citizen Kane (1941), which he co-wrote, produced, directed and starred in, is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. He went on to direct classics including The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), and Touch of Evil (1958). He received a Special Oscar in 1971 and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1975. He died on 10 October 1985 at the age of 70.

Orson Welles's journey was one of extraordinary creative ambition and innovation. Born in Wisconsin, he was a precocious child who pursued music and painting before finding his true calling in theatre. His early stage work in Ireland and New York established him as a prodigy, and his productions for the Federal Theatre Project broke new ground. The Mercury Theatre became a crucible for his creativity, producing innovative interpretations of classics and, crucially, his legendary radio broadcasts. His distinctive directorial styleโfeaturing layered and non-linear narrative forms, dramatic lighting, unusual camera angles, sound techniques borrowed from radio, deep focus shots and long takesโhas been praised as revolutionary. He was an outsider to the studio system, struggling for creative control throughout his career, but his body of work remains a testament to the power of artistic vision. He is considered among the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time.
