Xenophon Bust

This bust depicts Xenophon, the Greek historian, philosopher, and military leader born in Athens around 430 BC and who died around 354 BC. A student and admirer of Socrates, he is now regarded as one of the major authors of Ancient Greece.

The sculpture is inspired by one of the most popular and commonly reproduced representations associated with Xenophon, particularly the famous sculpted portrait traditionally identified as depicting him. His mature features, full beard, and wavy hair are recreated here in a classical sculptural style. The ancient Greek drapery covering his shoulders reinforces the historical character of the bust and its connection to the Hellenic world.

Xenophon is best known for the Anabasis, his account of the expedition of the Ten Thousand. Following the failure of Cyrus the Younger's campaign against his brother, the Persian king Artaxerxes II, thousands of Greek mercenaries found themselves stranded deep within the Persian Empire. Xenophon became one of the key leaders of their retreat and later recorded their extraordinary journey toward the Black Sea. The story is particularly remembered for the famous cry “Thalatta! Thalatta!” — “The sea! The sea!”, shouted by the Greeks when they finally saw the sea and realized they were approaching the Greek world once again.

Xenophon was far more than a soldier. A prolific writer, he also wrote about Socrates, politics, education, military leadership, horsemanship, and the organization of society. His surviving works remain invaluable sources for understanding the Greek world of the fourth century BC.
