Yi Sun-sin - Bust

This bust depicts Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598), the celebrated Korean admiral of the Joseon dynasty and one of the most iconic military figures in Korean history. He is particularly remembered for his strategic brilliance, courage, and numerous naval victories against Japanese forces during the Imjin War (1592–1598).

As commander of the Korean fleet, Yi Sun-sin repeatedly defeated enemy forces that greatly outnumbered his own. He is also closely associated with the Geobukseon, better known as the “turtle ship,” a heavily armed and covered Korean warship. Perhaps his most famous achievement was the Battle of Myeongnyang in 1597, when his dramatically reduced fleet successfully confronted and repelled a vastly larger Japanese force.

Yi Sun-sin was killed in 1598 during the Battle of Noryang, one of the final major engagements of the war. According to tradition, after being mortally wounded by a bullet, he ordered that his death be concealed from his men until the battle was over so that their morale would not be affected. His devotion and extraordinary military achievements made him a national hero in Korea.

This 3D-printable bust is inspired by the most popular and iconic photograph of the famous statue of Yi Sun-sin located at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul. It recreates his commanding appearance, including his traditional helmet, beard, and richly detailed armor. Particular attention has been given to the volumes of the armor, protective plates, and stern facial features to convey the strength and authority traditionally associated with the admiral.
