Alexander Montgomery Carlisle was born on 8 July 1854 in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland . At the age of just 16 in 1870, he became a premium apprentice at Harland & Wolff, the Belfast shipyard that was rapidly becoming one of the world's leading shipbuilding companies . His skills in draughtsmanship were quickly recognised, and he rose meteorically through the company, being appointed chief draughtsman and in 1878 shipyard manager . He was closely involved with designing all the yard's major liners and steamers for four decades . His designs for the Teutonic in 1889 were said to be the finest designs ever submitted to the Admiralty; she was the first transatlantic liner built without auxiliary rigged sails . Before his retirement in June 1910, he worked on the blueprints of the revolutionary White Star ships, the Olympic and her more famous sister, the Titanic . He was responsible for coordinating the designs and the fitting out and decor of what were to be the most luxurious ships afloat . In 1907, he was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland by King Edward VII . He retired on 30 June 1910, succumbing to a nervous breakdown and ill health . He passed away on 9 March 1926 at the age of 71 in London .

    Key Achievements:

Chief Naval Architect at Harland & Wolff โ€“ Rose from apprentice to General Manager and Chairman

Designer of the Olympic-Class Liners โ€“ Orchestrated the design of the Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic

The Teutonic (1889) โ€“ His designs were hailed as the finest ever submitted to the Admiralty

Lifeboat Innovation โ€“ He advocated for the Welin Quadrant davit system to carry more lifeboats

Privy Councillor โ€“ Appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland in 1907

Four Decades of Service โ€“ Retired in 1910 after 40 years at the world's premier shipyard

Alexander Carlisle's journey was one of extraordinary talent and dedication. Born in Ballymena, he entered Harland & Wolff at sixteen and never looked back . His skill as a draughtsman was exceptional, and he was entrusted with some of the most ambitious shipbuilding projects of the age. He coordinated the designs and the fitting out of the Olympic-class liners, working alongside his brother-in-law Lord Pirrie and his assistant Thomas Andrews . He was responsible for the decor, the equipment, and the general arrangements that made these ships the most luxurious afloat . He suggested a new design of lifeboat davit to carry four boats per pair, thus providing more than the outdated Board of Trade minimum requirement; the White Star Line decided this would reduce promenade space and opted for one boat per davitโ€”a decision that would have tragic consequences . He testified at the 1912 British inquiry into the sinking, heartbroken by the loss of so many former colleagues . He retired in 1910 due to ill health and a nervous breakdown, not, as myth suggests, over an argument about lifeboats .
