Charles I was born on 19 November 1600 in Dunfermline Palace, Scotland . He was the second son of King James VI of Scotland and I of England, and became heir to the throne following the death of his elder brother Henry . He ascended to the throne in 1625, inheriting a kingdom deeply divided by religious and political tensions. His reign was marked by his belief in the divine right of kings โ the idea that monarchs were accountable only to God. This brought him into conflict with Parliament, which sought to limit royal power. Tensions escalated into the English Civil War (1642โ1651), a brutal conflict between Royalists ("Cavaliers") and Parliamentarians ("Roundheads"). Charles was defeated, captured, and put on trial for high treason. On 30 January 1649, he was executed outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall. His execution was a watershed moment in British history, abolishing the monarchy and establishing the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. His son would later be restored to the throne as Charles II in 1660.
Key Milestones:
Accession to the Throne (1625) โ Became King of England, Scotland, and Ireland
The English Civil War (1642โ1651) โ A brutal conflict between Crown and Parliament
The Battle of Naseby (1645) โ A decisive defeat for the Royalists
Imprisonment and Trial (1648โ1649) โ Captured and tried for high treason
Execution (1649) โ Beheaded outside the Banqueting House, Whitehall
The Stuart Restoration (1660) โ His son, Charles II, restored the monarchy

Charles I's reign was one of the most dramatic and transformative in British history. He was a deeply cultured and devout king, a patron of the arts, and a devoted family man. However, his belief in the absolute authority of the monarch put him on a collision course with Parliament. His marriage to the Catholic Henrietta Maria of France deepened suspicions among Protestant subjects. His attempt to impose a new prayer book on Scotland sparked the Bishops' Wars, which in turn led to the outbreak of the English Civil War. He was defeated, captured, and eventually tried by a court that he refused to recognise. He faced his execution with remarkable dignity, declaring to those present: "I go from a corruptible to an incorruptible crown, where no disturbance can be." His death did not end the conflict; the monarchy was abolished, and England became a republic under Oliver Cromwell. But his legacy endured, and he was venerated by Royalists as a martyr. His story remains one of the most compelling in British history.
