Charles was defeated, captured, and put on trial for high treason. On 30 January 1649, he was executed outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall. His execution was a watershed moment in British history, abolishing the monarchy and establishing the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. His son would later be restored to the throne as Charles II in 1660.
