George Washington Carver was born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri, during the Civil War . His exact birth date is unknown, but he was born sometime around 1864 . After slavery was abolished, he continued to learn and grow, eventually earning a master's degree in agricultural science from Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University) . In 1896, Booker T. Washington invited him to lead the agriculture department at the newly founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where he would spend the rest of his career .

Carver's most famous work involved finding new uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans to help diversify Southern agriculture and break the cycle of cotton monoculture . He developed over 300 products from peanuts, including:
Food Products โ Peanut butter, peanut oil, and various food substitutes
Industrial Products โ Plastics, paints, dyes, and cosmetics
Medicinal Products โ Various treatments and compounds
Agricultural Products โ Fertilizers and animal feed
The Peanut's Impact:
Carver's work with peanuts helped revitalise Southern agriculture, which had been devastated by the boll weevil and the depletion of soil from continuous cotton cultivation . By promoting crop rotation and the use of nitrogen-fixing plants, he helped restore the land and improve the lives of thousands of farmers.
