While plowing a potato field at age 14, Farnsworth noticed the straight, parallel lines created by the horse-drawn harrow and suddenly envisioned a system that would break an image into horizontal lines and reassemble them into a picture at the other end . He realized that only an electronic system could scan and assemble images fast enough for television . That same year, he sketched his idea for an "image dissector" on the chalkboard for his high school chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman – a drawing that would prove invaluable years later in his patent battle with RCA .
