Virgil was born on 15 October 70 BCE in a small village near Mantua in Northern Italy . The son of a farmer, his love of the Italian countryside and its people colours all his poetry . He was educated at Cremona, Milan, and Rome, acquiring a thorough knowledge of Greek and Roman authors and receiving detailed training in rhetoric and philosophy . His life was devoted entirely to poetry and to studies connected with it; his health was never robust, and he played no part in military or political life .

    โœ… "๐“๐ก๐ž ๐“๐ก๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐Œ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ" ๐Ÿ“š:
Virgil composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature :

The Eclogues (or Bucolics) (42โ€“37 BCE) โ€“ A collection of ten pastoral poems, some of which brought the pastoral mode into touch with the real world, expressing the sorrow of the dispossessed during the civil wars . The fourth eclogue, sometimes called the Messianic, prophesies the birth of a child who will bring back the Golden Age .

The Georgics (37โ€“30 BCE) โ€“ A superb didactic poem on agriculture, written "not to instruct farmers but to delight readers" . It is a plea for the restoration of the traditional agricultural life of Italy and reflects Virgil's deep attachment to the simple virtues of the Italian people .

The Aeneid (30โ€“19 BCE) โ€“ His greatest work, the national epic of Rome . In twelve books, it tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan prince destined to found a new city in the West from which Rome would spring . The poem was left unfinished at Virgil's death .

    โœ… "๐€๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Œ๐š๐ง" โ€“ ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐€๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ข๐ โš”๏ธ:
The Aeneid opens with the famous words: "Arma virumque cano" (I sing of arms and the man) . The poem operates on a double time scale; it is heroic and yet Augustan, foreshadowing the real events of Roman history and the reign of Augustus . The sonorous prophecy by Jupiter in Book I, giving a picture of Rome's divinely inspired destiny, has a moving patriotic impact: "To these I set no bounds in space or timeโ€”I have given them rule without end" . In Book VI, Aeneas visits the Underworld and sees the heroes of Roman history waiting to be born, defining the Roman mission as one concerned with government and civilization: "Rule the people with your sway, spare the conquered, and war down the proud" .

    โœ… "๐“๐ก๐ž ๐…๐š๐œ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐š ๐‹๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐†๐ข๐š๐ง๐ญ" ๐ŸŽจ:
This bust draws on the rich tradition of Virgil portraiture:

Laurel wreath โ€“ The poet is crowned, a symbol of his literary achievement and the honour of poets in antiquity .

The toga โ€“ Draped in traditional Roman fashion, reflecting his status as a great Roman citizen .

The youthful image โ€“ This sculptural interpretation, like many classic versions, depicts Virgil in his younger form, capturing the intensity and genius of his creative vision .

    โœ… "๐“๐ก๐ž ๐…๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐–๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง ๐‹๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž" โœจ:
    Virgil's influence is unparalleled:

Dante's Guide โ€“ In the Divine Comedy, Virgil appears as Dante's guide through Hell and Purgatory, a testament to his enduring stature as the greatest of poets .

The Aeneid's Legacy โ€“ The poem has been called "the classic of all Europe" by T.S. Eliot .

Literary Immortality โ€“ Virgil's work has inspired writers for over two millennia, from the Roman poets who followed him to the modern era.

    โœ…

He was a man of peasant stock โ€“ His love of the countryside and its people colours all his poetry .

He was shy and retiring โ€“ He spoke once in the lawcourts without distinction and gave up any ideas of a public career .

He asked for the Aeneid to be burned โ€“ Legend says Virgil instructed his executor to destroy the unfinished epic, but Augustus ordered its publication .

He was regarded as a patron of Mantua โ€“ The city of his birth holds him in special honour, with numerous depictions of the poet in its public spaces .

He died of a fever โ€“ Contracted on a visit to Greece with the Emperor, he died at Brundisium in 19 BCE .
