Christopher Columbus (1451โ1506) was an Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Genoa. Convinced that the world was smaller than believed, he proposed reaching Asia by sailing westward across the Atlantic. After years of rejection from Portugal and other courts, he finally secured funding from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain and set off into the unknown.

Columbus made four transatlantic voyages that changed the course of history:
First Voyage (1492โ1493) โ Landed in the Bahamas (thinking he had reached the East Indies). Explored Cuba and Hispaniola.
Second Voyage (1493โ1496) โ Larger fleet of 17 ships. Established the first European colony in the Americas.
Third Voyage (1498โ1500) โ Reached South America. Returned to Spain in chains after accusations of mismanagement.
Fourth Voyage (1502โ1504) โ Explored Central America. Shipwrecked on Jamaica for a year before rescue.

Returned to Spain โ March 15, 1493, hailed as a hero
"Admiral of the Ocean Sea" โ The title granted by the Spanish crown

Modern scholarship has highlighted troubling aspects of Columbus's legacy:
Enslavement of indigenous peoples โ Columbus sent hundreds of Taรญno people to Spain as slaves
Harsh governance โ As governor of Hispaniola, his administration was marked by brutality
Disease transmission โ European diseases devastated native populations
The Columbus debate โ Celebrated as a hero by some, condemned as a villain by others
His legacy is complex โ but his impact on world history is undeniable.

๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ ๐:
He never set foot on North America โ His explorations were limited to the Caribbean and Central/South America
He died believing he had reached Asia โ Columbus never accepted that he had discovered a "New World"
His remains were moved multiple times โ Traveling from Spain to Santo Domingo to Cuba and back to Spain
He was not the first European โ The Vikings (Leif Erikson) reached North America around 1000 AD
Columbus Day โ A federal holiday in the United States, increasingly controversial
