Moliรจre was born in Paris on 15 January 1622, the son of a prosperous upholsterer who held a royal appointment . At age 21, he abandoned a promising career as a royal furnisher to pursue a life on the stage . His determination to become an actor was so strong that he endured imprisonment for debt, bankruptcy, and years of touring the provinces before finally achieving success . His plays satirized human weaknesses with unmatched wit and insight, and he is so central to French culture that the French language is often called "the language of Moliรจre."

Moliรจre's plays are among the greatest in world literature:
Tartuffe (1664) โ A scathing attack on religious hypocrisy, banned by the Catholic Church
Don Juan (1665) โ A bold retelling of the legendary libertine
The Misanthrope (1666) โ A masterpiece of social satire
The Miser (1668) โ A classic comedy of avarice
The Bourgeois Gentleman (1670) โ Mocking social pretension
Scapin (1671) โ A brilliant farce
The Imaginary Invalid (1673) โ His final play, a comedy about hypochondria

He toured the provinces for 13 years โ From 1645 to 1658, learning his craft as actor, director, and playwright
He performed before King Louis XIV โ In 1658, securing royal favour that launched his career
He died on stage โ Collapsed during the fourth performance of The Imaginary Invalid and died a few hours later
